Saryuparin Brahmin: हिंदू धर्मग्रंथों और किंवदंतियों में कई ऐतिहासिक घटनाएँ ऐसी हैं, जिनका प्रभाव समाज की संरचना और परंपराओं पर पड़ा। ऐसी ही एक कथा भगवान श्रीराम के अश्वमेध यज्ञ और सरयूपारीण ब्राह्मणों से जुड़ी हुई है। यह कथा बताती है कि कैसे ब्राह्मण समाज दो भागों में विभाजित हुआ—सरयूपारीण ब्राह्मण और कान्यकुब्ज ब्राह्मण।
प्राचीन काल में सभी ब्राह्मण एक ही समुदाय के रूप में जाने जाते थे। लेकिन जब भगवान श्रीराम ने लंका विजय के बाद अश्वमेध यज्ञ करवाया, तो इस यज्ञ के दौरान ब्राह्मणों के बीच एक विवाद उत्पन्न हो गया।कथाओं के अनुसार, कुछ ब्राह्मणों ने यज्ञ में सम्मिलित होने से इनकार कर दिया। उनका मानना था कि श्रीराम ने रावण का वध कर “ब्रह्महत्या” की थी। चूंकि रावण जन्म से एक ब्राह्मण था (वह महर्षि विश्रवा का पुत्र था), इसलिए उसे मारना ब्रह्महत्या के समान माना गया। यही कारण था कि कुछ ब्राह्मणों ने भगवान राम द्वारा कराए गए यज्ञ का भोजन ग्रहण करने से इनकार कर दिया।
यज्ञ में भाग लेने वाले और न लेने वाले ब्राह्मण
कान्यकुब्ज ब्राह्मण – वे ब्राह्मण जो मानते थे कि रावण केवल जन्म से ब्राह्मण था लेकिन उसके कर्म राक्षसों जैसे थे। इसलिए उसके वध को अधर्म नहीं माना जा सकता। इन ब्राह्मणों ने भगवान राम के अश्वमेध यज्ञ में भाग लिया और यज्ञ का भोजन भी स्वीकार किया।
सरयूपारीण ब्राह्मण(Saryuparin Brahmin) – वे ब्राह्मण जो मानते थे कि रावण का वध ब्रह्महत्या के समान था, इसलिए उन्होंने इस यज्ञ से दूरी बना ली और भोजन भी स्वीकार नहीं किया।कथाओं के अनुसार, भगवान श्रीराम ने उन ब्राह्मणों को, जिन्होंने यज्ञ में भाग नहीं लिया, सरयू नदी के पार बसने का आदेश दिया। यही कारण है कि ये ब्राह्मण “सरयूपारीण ब्राह्मण” कहलाए।
सरयूपारीण ब्राह्मणों की प्रमुख गोत्रीय शाखाएँ हैं:शुक्ल , त्रिपाठी , मिश्र , पाण्डेय , पाठक , उपाध्याय , चतुर्वेदी , ओझा
इस कथा का धार्मिक और सामाजिक प्रभाव यह रहा कि ब्राह्मण समाज दो प्रमुख भागों में बँट गया—कान्यकुब्ज और सरयूपारीण। समय के साथ, दोनों समुदायों की परंपराएँ और रीति-रिवाज भी अलग-अलग विकसित हुए। सरयूपारीण ब्राह्मणों(Saryuparin Brahmin) ने अपने सिद्धांतों और शुद्धता के नियमों को अधिक कड़ा बना लिया और समाज में उच्च स्थान बनाए रखा। कान्यकुब्ज ब्राह्मणों ने अधिक व्यावहारिक दृष्टिकोण अपनाया और राजाओं व प्रशासन से जुड़कर समाज में एक महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई।
